Worth knowing - French
behavior and customs
Business Relations
At a first business
meeting, everyone introduces themselves and
presents their business cards. The French are generally quite
formal and shake hands, even with women. Clothes are very formal
(dark suits for men, suits for women).
Business luncheons
Business can be discussed over a meal, since food is such a
passion in France. Lunch usually starts around 12.30 p.m. and
can last two hours. Dinner starts around 8 p.m. Meals are often
composed of a starter (hors d'oeuvre), main course with meat or
fish and garnish, cheese, then dessert. Wine naturally
accompanies the majority of meals (except breakfast !).
Appointments and courtesy
Appointments are generally fixed between 9 and 12 a.m., and in the
afternoon from 2.30 p.m. The French have a serious, even solemn,
approach and are reserved by nature, so it's not advisable to
behave in an overly casual way. Many courtesy rules are best
obeyed in France. Some things are to be avoided, such as chewing
gum in public. Other polite behavior includes standing up when a
visitor walks into the room and not forgetting to compliment
your host/hostess on his/her choice of restaurant.
