A town whose charm and mellowness have inspired many artists, Menton deserves to be toured at a gentle walking pace. From the covered market-place, stroll the pedestrian area round Rue Saint Michel, then climb the quiet streets to the beautiful Church of Saint Michel.
An obligatory pause in front of the steps to admire the view of the Italian coast, and the superb mosaic at the entrance to the church and then...restaurants french riviera !

Wander around the nearby streets, with their warm ochre-red tints, then pay a visit to the White Penitents' Chapel and, a little further on, the Black Pentitents' Chapel. Retrace your steps down the Rampe Saint-Michel, then follow the port in the direction of the Bastion, a small fortress which today plays host to the Cocteau Museum.

Return along the seafront, the Promenade du Soleil, the beaches and restaurants french riviera. To your right, you'll see Menton's Casino, behind it the town center and the gardens along Avenue Verdun, the scene for the Citrus Festival held every February. End your tour at the Cemetery in the Old Castle, a pleasant setting offering a bird's-eye view of the entire town.

When you walk back down from the Church of Saint-Michel, along the seafront heading towards Italy, you can visit one of several gardens remarkable for their collections of rare or extraordinary plants. The garden of Les Colombières in particular will take you on an exploratory tour of Mediteranean flora with very lovely scenic views, or you can opt for the gardens of Fontana Rosa, formerly the home of novelist Blasco Ibanez.

Back to the town center for lunch and restaurants french riviera. In the afternoon, take the seafront along the Promenade du Soleil to visit the Palais Carnolès (access via the Avenue de la Madone). This magnificent palace, once the residence of the Princes of Monaco, accommodates the Fine Arts Museum (open from 3 p.m. only), while its gar-dens contain Europe's largest collection of citrus trees, testifying to Menton's particularly mild climate.

1st day : Menton deserves at least one full day devoted to it, especially its Old Town and really superb gardens. 2nd day : between Menton and Monaco, the village of Roquebrune (access via the Basse Corniche) huddles around its medieval castle. Do not forget to stop in restaurants french riviera !
