Situated at the western end of the Côte d'Azur, Mandelieu-la Napoule is a
bathing resort which has undergone rapid development over the past few years. |
A highly-prized center for water sports and golfing : a large harbor
close to the huge castle and two seaside golf courses. Mandelieu is basically for
holiday-makers, though it becomes the Capital of Mimosa every year in February.
The Castle - a truly handsome building - was restored in 1919 by Mr. and Mrs. Henry Clews and it is now a museum where sculptures by Mr. Henry Clews are exhibited, along with many temporary exhibitions and events.
Make the most of a few hours freedom to wander along the San Peyre footpath: there are gardens, Roman ruins and an illustrated trig point to help you better understand the magnificent landscape spread before you.

History |

|
From Roman times to the Middle Ages, the village and the Castle were known as "Avignonet". After the village was totally destroyed in 1387, the Lord of Villeneuve ordered it to be rebuilt on the rocks along the coast - in the district known as Napola. In 1461, following a period of unrest, the population was wiped out and the village re-inhabited by the Genoese. It was in the 19th century that Mandelieu La Napoule began to earn its name as a holiday resort thanks to the Tsar's nephew, who had the golf course built.

Theoule
sur mer : Formerly a very safe harbour, Théoule sur Mer - located in the shelter of a small creek in the Esterel - was protected by a tower that was demolished in 1648. In the 19th century, fishermen set up home in the Cardanne Cave.
Until 1929, Théoule was part of Mandelieu but has been independent since then.
Théoule sur Mer is a quiet holiday resort with attractive beaches, creeks set among red cliffs, hiking paths through the Esterel mountains, walks through the Pointe de l'Aiguille park.
|
Pégomas : Pégomas was once a hideaway for highwaymen and thieves but is now a quiet little village. A number of market gardens occupy the surrounding hillsides.
