welcomed in 2001 more than 9.3 million tourists, amounting to 1% of total tourist
numbers world-wide. There is no aspect of French Riviera tourism that is not
experiencing healthy growth: vacation or business visits, trade shows and international
conventions. Behind this stands a rich and varied policy aiming at hosting major
events, the advantage of a unique environment and significant investment efforts
devoted to infrastructures such as hotels, congress and trade show facilities.
The region is also the leading venue for calls by cruise liners. In 2001, the
ports of Nice-Villefranche and Cannes welcomed 350,000 cruise-passengers, a
figure that has been increasing continually over the past several years.
Europe's leading technology park, Sophia Antipolis and the whole French
Riviera region each year attract many businesses of the high technology world:
telecommunications, Internet, multimedia, life sciences, biotechnology, etc.,
a variety of expertise that confirms that the French Riviera is at the heart
of technological advances. In 2001, over a hundred innovative companies chose
the French Riviera as a place to set up a business office.
With its cutting-edge technological base, the French Riviera boasts a fabric
of efficient industrial and commercial companies.
France's busiest international airport after Paris, Nice Côte
dAzur Airport and the business airport of Cannes-Mandelieu represent a
vital feature of the Riviera's economic expansion, providing true access to
the world, with more than 75 direct links to 26 countries.
The French Riviera is the fifth largest urban area in France, a metropolis
in Southern Europe which has grown gradually over more than 2 centuries, with
a respect for its outstanding natural assets and an undisputed quality of life.
From the Alps to the shores of the Mediterranean, the French Riviera possesses
unbelievably diverse and extraordinarily beautiful landscapes, and a lifestyle
